- Initial hesitation due to stigma and lack of awareness: Many women and girls expressed reluctance to use reusable products due to cultural taboos and misinformation around menstruation. This has been effectively addressed through our interactive education and awareness sessions, which create safe spaces for learning and open dialogue. See Our Impact for Testimonials.
- Drying difficulties in humid or rainy regions: Hygienic drying was raised as a concern, especially in wet zones and high-humidity areas where sunlight or privacy may be limited. While reusable pads seem most suitable for dry and coastal regions, women who are living in period poverty continue to use cloth and other unhygienic methods during menstruation. In addition, we have further expanded our product portfolio to include menstrual cups—an alternative that offers greater convenience in such climates however the cup is not suitable for young school girls and unmarried girls due to cultural stigmas around virginity.
- Varied product preferences: Feedback from users highlighted different preferences around pad colour, size, and thickness. This ongoing dialogue has directly informed product improvements and innovation, ensuring that our offerings remain user-centered and culturally appropriate.
Reusable menstrual products significantly reduce waste and pollution associated with single-use sanitary pads and tampons, which are typically made from plastic-based materials and can take up to 800 years to decompose in landfills.
Here’s how FemmeCare products contribute to environmental sustainability:
- Waste Reduction: One FemmeCare reusable pad replaces up to 150 disposable pads over its lifespan. A single user switching to reusables for two years can eliminate up to 3–5 kg of menstrual waste, including plastic and packaging.
• Carbon Footprint: By avoiding the energy-intensive production and transport cycles of disposables, reusable pads and cups can reduce individual carbon emissions equivalent to planting 4–5 trees annually.
• Plastic-Free Design: FemmeCare pads use AZO-free cotton and are free of bleaches, dioxins, and perfumes—unlike many disposables that contain 90% plastic and synthetic additives.
• Biodegradability (Cups): FemmeCare menstrual cups are made from natural fair rubber, which is biodegradable under the right conditions—unlike silicone-based alternatives.
• Sustainable Manufacturing: Produced in Selyn’s solar-powered workshops and packed in recyclable PE-LD ziplock pouches, FemmeCare products are designed with both people and the planet in mind.
• Supports SDGs & ESG Reporting: Our work contributes to several SDGs, including:
- SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
- SDG 5: Gender Equality
- SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
- SDG 13: Climate Action
These indicators are useful for partners seeking to align with climate goals and corporate sustainability frameworks.
FemmeCare has expanded its range to include:
• Menstrual cups (natural rubber)
• Period panties
• Waterproof carry bags (4/8 each)
• Panties and larger/heavier flow pad options
* Regular & Heavy Flow Pads

Yes. Education is central to our model. We support the Selyn Foundation #BleedGood movement which pairs product distribution with menstrual health education and awareness. We are working closely with partners, including the Government to institutionalize this in the national health and education sectors
Our education component includes in-depth community trainings on menstrual hygiene, sexual and reproductive health & rights, Gender-Based Violence awareness & child safety. In addition we have interactive training on environmental protection during the sessions. These topics are delivered by experts in the subjects, in all relevant local languages.
We remain committed to ensure an end to period poverty not just through access to products, but by also actively supporting policy reform and shifts in socio-cultural attitudes. As part of our efforts, we developed a policy brief that has been presented to government officials, and collaborate with other NGO’s and CSO’s on amplifying advocacy. We continue to speak at public forums and plenaries on the need for sustainable solutions for climate adaptation and menstrual equity and we use our social media to engage with civil society on important conversations to de-stigmatize menstruation.
